Secure email and social accounts from a clean device, change reused passwords, enable multi-factor authentication and preserve recovery alerts before blocking or deleting anything.

Legal classification
Match the conduct to the facts, not a label
Depending on the conduct, the analysis may involve stalking, criminal intimidation, privacy violations, impersonation, unauthorised access or publication of prohibited material. Section 78 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 addresses stalking in specified circumstances, including monitoring a woman’s use of electronic communication. The Information Technology Act, 2000 contains separate provisions concerning identity theft, personation, privacy and electronic publication. The applicable provisions must be selected from the actual words, acts, participants and dates.

Keep original messages and files where possible. Export chats, retain full email headers, capture profile URLs and dates, and preserve the device or account from which the material was received. A cropped screenshot may omit identity and timing information. Sections 61 to 63 of the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023 govern proof of electronic records, so later production should be planned while the source is still available.
- Create a dated event log without editing the original messages.
- Store screenshots and exports in a separate read-only folder.

Coordinate platform, portal and police steps
A platform report may help remove content but does not replace a properly supported complaint where criminal conduct is alleged. The National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal provides a national reporting route and displays the 1930 helpline for cybercrime reporting. The complaint should identify urgent safety needs, the suspected conduct, relevant accounts and preserved evidence without making unsupported accusations.
