For example, an incorrect relationship type and a misspelled relative’s name are different errors; do not request a change to a name that is already correct. Identify the exact relationship-field error
Separate the elector’s own name from the father, mother, spouse or other relationship field. Record the current electoral-roll wording, the requested wording and whether the difference is a spelling, transliteration, surname, relationship type or identity mismatch. A focused request is easier to verify than a general statement that the family details are wrong.
Correction path for an existing entry
Where the elector is already enrolled and the relationship detail in that entry needs correction, the Election Commission’s Form 8 correction option is generally the starting point. The application should identify the particular to be corrected and attach material supporting the claim. If the elector’s own name is missing from the roll, an inclusion issue may require a different route.
Build a consistent evidence set
- Current EPIC details and electoral-roll extract showing the disputed relationship field.
- Earlier roll extracts, if they show a stable and consistent family link.
- A document that directly connects the elector with the parent or spouse named in the request.
- Identity records showing the preferred spelling of both names.
- Marriage, birth, school, passport or other relevant records where appropriate to the particular fact; no single document is automatically decisive in every case.
- A short explanation for Bengali-English transliteration, initials, surname changes or spelling variants across records.
Avoid common filing problems
- Do not change several unrelated particulars without clearly identifying each requested correction.
- Do not submit contradictory spellings without explaining which version is requested and why.
- Do not rely only on the printed EPIC if the electoral-roll entry itself must be corrected.

After an adverse order
Keep the acknowledgement, verification record, hearing submission and written order. Sections 22 and 23 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950 deal with correction, deletion and inclusion, and section 24 provides an appeal route from qualifying ERO orders. If you receive a message claiming that your own name or a parent/spouse name does not match during SIR, first verify your electoral-roll entry and any pending application through the Election Commission Voter Services Portal. The Election Commission also lists the Voter Helpline number 1950 for checking voter-registration information. Do not rely only on an unknown mobile number or forwarded message when deciding what documents to send.
If an existing electoral-roll entry needs correction, the current Form 8 expressly allows correction of relation type and relation name, supported by documentary proof. Preserve the message, sender details, screenshots and any official acknowledgement so the issue can be checked against the actual electoral record.
